What You Will

All of your guesses were right!

Charming and I went to see a splendid production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (or What You Will).

And this picture is from Act II, Scene III, where Sir Toby and company have been drinking spirits and singing and dancing quite loudly in the middle of the night.

And then Malvolio (clad in bed clothes–I love his cap!) angrily storms in and insults them.

(Oh, and I’m sorry about the confusion of the yellow stockings on The Fool.  I noticed them when I posted the picture and hoped it wouldn’t be misleading, but they’re just too blaring to ignore–sorry!!)

However, there is one mystery in this picture…..

I have no idea who the lady in blue is.

In this production, she was The Fool’s love interest and it appeared she was a servant.

But even though I searched the whole scene and the character list in my copy of Twelfth Night, I couldn’t find her name or an acknowledgment that she existed…..

Anyone else know who she is??

p.s. Thank you for playing and making your guesses!  This was such a fun diversion for me.  I forgot how much I love Shakespeare.  And quoting Much Ado About Nothing. :):)

  1. Hmmm. I don’t know who she is supposed to be either. Mysterious. Maybe she wasn’t supposed to be there. She looks a little uncomfortable in that picture.

  2. I wish I were more familiar with Twelfth Night. I had no idea what play it was, but it looks like fun! We always meant to go to shakespeare in the park, but never made it.
